Garages and workshops typically need bright light to carry out detailed, intricate work. Colour rendering may also be important for matching bodywork, a consideration which can be accommodated with a high CRI LED.

Metal halides produce a 360 degree spread of light which must be reflected and redirected, which results in light ‘spillage’. This, plus their long warm up time, makes them inefficient. Metal Halides produce higher heat emissions as well as infrared and harmful UV radiation. They are fragile and prone to breakage and failure, and the hazardous materials they contain mean that specialist disposal is required at the end of their life.

Warehouses & Factories Warehouses and factories are the most common applications for high bay lighting given the need to spread light evenly over a very large area. Warehouses with high shelving, in particular, need light which is mounted high enough to be distributed without being blocked, as this creates shadows. These businesses also often have 24-hour operations making LEDs a more economical choice as they are energy efficient and require little maintenance.

Fluorescent lighting has typically been used in many commercial applications, however they have a number of issues. Older fluorescent lights had a long warm-up time and also emitted a buzzing sound. As with HPS and MH options, fluorescents scatter light in a 360 degree spread around the bulb which is inefficient. They produce UV radiation and also contain toxic materials, so require special disposal. Fluorescents can also cause health issues including acting as a trigger for migraine headaches.

Colour temperature refers to the appearance of the light produced by a light source. The temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). Temperatures below 5000K are usually referred to as ‘warm’ and light contains more red or yellow tones. Temperatures over 5000K are ‘cool’ and are more blue in tone.

High bay lighting (also known as ‘hi bay’ or ‘UFO’) is a solution for spaces with high ceilings, where bright and uniform illumination is needed over a large area. What wattages are available? The wattage required depends on a combination of factors including the type of space (warehouse, gyms, retail stores, etc.), the ceiling height and the nature of the building. We have a range of wattages available and can advise on the best option:

HPS lights have a narrow colour spectrum, producing a very yellow light, and poor CRI. They take time to warm up and can flicker and come on and off at the end of their life. They are not as energy efficient as LEDs, due to the ‘wasted’ spread of light they produce, and energy lost through heat emissions created. HPS lights are fragile and more prone to breakage and failure, and in the worst case the glass bulb can fall from the ceiling. They contain hazardous materials meaning they need special disposal.

Large commercial spaces have typically been lit using options such as Metal Halide (MH), High Pressure Sodium (HPS) or fluorescent lights. These technologies all come with drawbacks, which are addressed by modern LED options.

Suspending high bay lights allows for the light level to be lowered in spaces with very high ceilings. In buildings with ceilings of 5-10m, high bay lights can be suspended on chains to place the light where it’s needed. This ensures that sufficient light reaches the ground.

High bay lights are always suspension mounted, but in cases where the ceiling is low enough, the suspension chains may only be short (for example 10cm), giving the appearance of surface mounting.

Gyms need bright illumination without glare or shadow. LED high bay lighting produces minimal heat emissions which is a benefit in a gym environment which is likely to be air-conditioned. Low maintenance also means there is little down time when facilities are not accessible.
