Sometimes the saying, "the more light the better", is not always the case when you buy an led light bar. In many respects, there is no point in buying a super bright lightbar without understanding the coverage of the light that you will across the road, down the road, and directly in front of the vehicle. It is important to get a bit of knowledge of what lightbar you are buying and how that relates to your existing lighting, and how the "technical specs" of a lightbar relates to the actual light on the road that you really require. Lightbars have changed significantly over the years, and although we can supply the cheapest light-bars on the market, they are not listed here, we only list products that have been thoroughly tested for performance and for use for different common applications. You might just be throwing your money away when you can save yourself time and money by giving us a call or sending us an email so we can listen to what your requirements are and advise you on the best product that suits your needs. Technology changes quickly in todays day and age, roughly every few months a new led light bar is being released and it is our job to test them out to see if it is more of the same, or if their is some new advantage in bringing it to market. The main advances in technology for led light bars is brightness, beam patterns, distances and widths, waterproofing and pressure equalization thermal management, wind resistance and aerodynamics, ease of fitting and bracket assemblies and adjustments, sturdiness, and last of all style. LED Light Bar Brightness As i said previously, there is a lot of misconceptions about how the brightness of a lightbar relates what you actually see on the road so i have given a brief description on what lux and lumen are below. Lumen and Lux of LED Light Bars The lumen and lux of an led lightbar can be summed up by saying lumen is the brightness the led produces and lux is the amount of light that is on the road in a specific area. Some people focus on lumen, some on lux, in my opinion lux is more important than lumen in terms of what you see, and lumen is important to gauge how much light the light-bars led's produce. Focusing only on lumen will not tell you how much light you will see on the road, it will only tell you how bright the led's are. Beam Patterns of LED Light Bars Beam patterns are one of the most important aspects when you buy an led light bar, as there is a myriad of applications that light-bars can be used for. For example, some clients already have spot lights and they just want to fill the area directly in front of the car, some want purely distance, and some what to get the best all-rounder for the job. I will go into a bit of detail below for your reference. Light Bars with Flood and Spot Beams The two most common beam patterns for led light bars are spot and spread, spot for distance, and spread for width. In essence, the deeper the dish in reflector, the more it tightens the beam into a spot, (like a torch), and the wider the reflector, the more spread you get. Getting combinations of both is the most popular option, but you can get dedicated spot or flood beam led light bars. Parabolic and Optical Lens LED Light Bars Speaking of reflectors for spot and flood beams, there are two main types of lenses on light-bars today, parabolic reflectors, and optical lenses. The parabolic reflectors are the most popular, although they are now hybridizing optical lenses with parabolic reflectors. the optical lenses are like magnifying glasses or convex/curved lenses which focus the beam and are good for giving you better sight lines and less scatter. Optical lenses do lose light efficacy, (the brightness of the light), but they also better focus the light, as i mentioned before. parabolic reflectors give you more light efficacy, (so they are brighter), but you also need to make sure the engineering is A1 so you get a good beam pattern. Ingress Ratings and Weatherproofing IP67 and IP68 are the best ratings for led light bars, and it means that under pressure from high pressure hoses or going through creeks while off-roading you can be certain that water isn't going to get into the lights and corrode components and give the led light bar a short lifespan. It also means if you are traveling in high dust areas you won't get the bad stuff getting in and wrecking your light bar. IP68 and IP67 You can check out the ingress rating chart on wikipedia here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code In a nutshell, IP67 and IP68 protect the light from water and dust intrusion. There are a lot of products out there that claim to be water and dust tight that aren't, and it is hard to tell until you put them to the test. LED Light Bar with Military Breathers Military breathers are for pressure equalization in high or low altitudes, and for ensuring that moisture does not affect the led light bar in different weather conditions such as when you get variances in pressure cells passing by Pressure Equalizing LED Light Bars A good quality light bar uses the pressure equalizing valves to regulate the air pressure in a light bar and allow the light bar to not get a build up of moisture, or release it, in different atmospheric climates, and also to create a better environment for the electrical components to operate unhindered by changes in pressure. The parabolic reflectors are the most popular, although they are now hybridizing optical lenses with parabolic reflectors. the optical lenses are like magnifying glasses or convex/curved lenses which focus the beam and are good for giving you better sight lines and less scatter.
